Episode 39 — Matt Timms

Matt Timms on Hey Brooklyn
Matt Timms is the host of a series of “takedowns”, or casual cookoffs for amateur chefs.  Most take place in Brooklyn, and he has plans to expand to other cities this year.  The “takedown” is a laid-back response to typical cookoffs with rigid guidelines; a quote from his blog reads, “At the Takedown, we embrace chaos.”  In other words, the rules are pretty flexible.

The first was a chili competition that quickly spawned others, including December’s fiercely competitive Cookie Takedown.  Bakers showed off family recipes and original creations while audience members tested and voted for their favorites.  (Tied for first place was my good friend Emily with her warm, gooey, caramel and sea salt cookies.  You should make them.  They are awesome.)

Matt has developed a hotsauce, too, called the Facemelter which you can buy at Chilli-Takedown.com, Marlow and Daughters and Soft Spot (it goes great in chili, but not on cookies). Matt also hosts a trivia night at Soft Spot on the first Tuesday of every month with Matt Langland.
