BoneGunn is an experimental band that “lives for the gaining of experience”. Their combined shared experiences (plus maybe a little bit of former LSD usage!) has made writing songs an eclectic experience for them. As for the name? They told me that you can make up whatever story you want for it.

Their background of writing Irish folk music definitely shines through in the two songs they played for us in-studio (well, technically, they played three songs for us in-studio… they got ahold of little toy piano we keep in the sound booth and sang a ditty that I thought was too cute to edit out). We also included Medicine Ball, a more rocking track off their self-titled EP, available on iTunes.

The band has started a project called “I Made an Art” with friend Anthony Dugo. There’s an art and music space at 53 Richards Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and once a month “I Made an Art” takes it over to put on “an eclectic mix of artwork, music and strange experiences.” Their mission statement goes on to say: “Our goal is to maintain a comfortable, open-minded atmosphere that encourages mixing genres and artistic styles, communities and creative minds.” The next all-day event is June 12 and artists interested in participating (plus folks looking to check it out) can go to the website (link below) and email info@imadeanart.com

Daniel and James are two of the members of LaStrada, a band that had a hard time describing their sound as strictly "indie" although that's probably the closet definition that fits. They say they are "an energetic rock/pop with strings, accordion, guitars, drums, whistles, circus animals, puppeteers, loud voices, etc." That fits, too.

You can catch them at the Bell House in Brooklyn on May 29, and heads up to local musicians: they are looking for a second violinist "that can shred" to join them.

Highlights of this interview include hearing about their unusual writing process, and the story of how they found Faten Kanaan, the artist that painted their album artwork. It is a totally New York City tale that takes place the most unique of New York City spaces: the subway.

She is not necessarily anti-glamor, rather, she talks to other people in their 20's and 30's about living a financially responsible life with a realistic budget in NYC.

An interview highlight for me was when she explained Groupon - a website many savvy people know about and love, but one I hadn't gotten around to understanding. Her website is full of great resources like this, as well as sillier things, like cheap beer, and much more serious things like setting up a retirement account and resume writing tips.

This one-of-a-kind interview delved into the world of gaming, and we cover a list of geeky things to do in Brooklyn. Non-gamers need not glaze over just yet; you might be surprised to find out that you actually ARE a gamer - I certainly was, in a moment where Jeffery laughingly got me to come out of my "gaming closet". I also sang the theme song to Super Mario Brothers.

Allison and Matt are gourmet pastry chefs who got married in a White Castle. That tells you a LOT about this really fun couple of bakers. Their cupcakes are high-brow creations – most are five to six steps in the making – with low-brow names; the “Bluth” is (of course) a banana flavor cupcake and a reference to Arrested Development (the best television show ever).

They started a business, opened a store, closed their store because the economy got bad and they wanted to see more of their boys (and each other), and now they run a wholesale business selling cupcakes to local stores.

There’s a “bonus track” at the end, after the credits, where they dish on “the best thing to ever come out of White Castle” and their off-beat wedding.

The best way to keep up with these two is by following them on Twitter, @Robicellis, and you can also become a Facebook fan. Make sure to tune in to their Twitter feed for announcements of fried cupcake events. Take it from me, deep fried cupcakes are NOT TO BE MISSED!

We talked about the struggles some people face when coming out and living their lives honestly. One of my favorite points in the interview is when we discus how “being mundane” and having a normal life is such a huge goal for a lot of homosexual people.

Rescue Chocolate is a vegan company using the finest ingredients and run by Sarah Gross. It is “the sweetest way to save a life” – 100% of the proceeds go to dog rescue organizations.

Sarah’s love of chocolate and dogs comes shining through this interview. Listen as she talks passionately about many of the issues that face “homeless pets” today (a term that she introduced to me, and which I think is so powerful. It’s a good reminder that a lot of what we might normally call “strays” would be excellent as pets!)

There are special treats for Easter and Passover, too, on sale for a limited time: A dairy-free cream egg and a matzah-shaped kosher-for-Passover chocolate bar.

Visit RescueChocolate.com to order online or find out where you can purchase in stores around the city.

Become a fan on Facebook, and follow them on Twitter, @RescueChocolate.

P.S. A note about the Pick Me Pepper bar, should the combo of pepper and chocolate be raising your eyebrows: it is delicious. Sarah brought us one, and Rob and I ate it in one sitting! It’s an excellent chocolate for people who don’t like the super-sweetness of a plain dark chocolate bar.

Wow. What a year!

Thank you, a million times, to all of the listeners who tune in each week. It is amazing to me that my little project has touched so many people and inspired so many wonderful emails and tweets and conversations. I am humbled.

It was a year ago that we launched at SxSWi! I’m here again in Austin, TX, running around – if you’re here too and you see me, come give me a high five and get a Hey Brooklyn sticker! They are cute, tiny little guys you can put on your laptop. You can even have two.

It’s been 45 episodes, a few thousand downloads and 150 Facebook fans!

Thank you to all of my wonderful guests. My goal was to create a show that will inspire others to be great and creative, and, based on the emails I’ve gotten from encouraged listeners, you have.

Thank you to all of the old friends who listened and told me “I could do it” when I was having “one of those days”.

Thank you most of all to my dear husband Rob Blatt, for recording and producing the show every week. You rock my world and I love you.

Here’s to year two.

I’ll be back next week!

- Amber

This former art model has the entrepreneurial spirit that dictated he wanted to move away from having his worth determined by someone else, a concept we love here at Hey Brooklyn.

Catch Ryan at the Brooklyn Flea on weekends, on Etsy at FluxProductions.etsy.com and on the street in Manhattan “sometimes, somewhere between Greene and Wooster on Prince Street”. If you see him, tell him Hey Brooklyn says hello.

Kelsey visits the school a few days before picture day with a Dennis-the-photographer puppet to get the younger kids excited and warmed up to the idea. They brought him along to our interview to show me. (During our photo session with the three of them we got a few chuckles out of the construction crew nearby!)

I met Stephanie at a house party she was throwing for previous Hey Brooklyn guest Ken Wheaton, and she gave me a gold star. She does this for a lot of people she meets, people that need to have a gold star because they’ve made an effort, they’ve tried, or they’re trying. It’s a sparkly yellow foam star, just a sticker, but it meant a lot to me, and brightens the days of others who get them, too.

She keeps a blog called Gold Star 4 Trying where she chronicles this effort to make the random strangers she meets every day a little happier, and talking to her was so, so good.

Matt Timms is the host of a series of "takedowns", or casual cookoffs for amateur chefs. Most take place in Brooklyn, and he has plans to expand to other cities this year. The "takedown" is a laid-back response to typical cookoffs with rigid guidelines; a quote from his blog reads, "At the Takedown, we embrace chaos." In other words, the rules are pretty flexible.

The first was a chili competition that quickly spawned others, including December's fiercely competitive Cookie Takedown. Bakers showed off family recipes and original creations while audience members tested and voted for their favorites. (Tied for first place was my good friend Emily Hanhan with her warm, gooey, caramel and sea salt cookies. You should make them. They are awesome.)

Matt has developed a hotsauce, too, called the Facemelter which you can buy at http://chilli-takedown.com, Marlow and Daughters and Soft Spot (it goes great in chili, but not on cookies). Matt also hosts a trivia night at Soft Spot on the first Tuesday of every month with Matt Langland.

He’s shooting portraits of the younger generation of comedians – Demetri Martin, Samm Levine, John Hamm, Charlyne Yi have all been in front of his lens – and he has plans to turn them into a book.

Seth is a great guy, but I was still nervous about turning my own camera on a photographer! It was cold and dark out, so we shot in the hallway of the studio, and he literally climbed the walls. I tried to get my shots in before the security guard yelled at us. We made it, but barely!

I asked if they were nervous about starting a company in a recession (they’ve only been in business since July 2009 and quit their jobs to focus full-time on beer), and Stephen answered that working in their regular jobs was scarier. I love the entrepreneurial spirit!

I found out brewing quality beer in your house is not expensive, complicated or smelly with one of their kits, and they offer a variety of flavors already pre-measured.

We discussed his debut novel, Swimming Inside the Sun. Set in the early 2000’s, shortly after 9/11, the book follows Daniel Green, a 27-year-old New Yorker reeling after the loss of a record deal. I won’t give too much away, but I’ll say this: the novel is so well written that, while reading, I literally rolled my eyes and got annoyed when I felt the character was being annoying. It is such a pleasure to read a book that made me feel so much, and fascinating to read a book that made me a little angry at the character.

David got into the ins and outs of writing, the underlying themes of the book (especially Dan’s self-awareness), and our interview became an in-depth look at the process of writing.

After his friends encouraged him to sell it, he started Mama O’s Kimchee, a name with a nod to his mom who taught him how to cook in the first place.

In our interview I found out what kimchee actually is, got a crash course on preparation, and found out why Mama O’s is so much better than the mass-produced kimchee often commercially available.

We talked about her upcoming album, which she is funding via fan support. If you’d like to help her make her next full-length CD, you can go to the donation section of her website and chip in. To give listeners a taste of what the new album will be like, she’s released an EP of three songs from the album, and you can listen to them here.
